Kalpak Pathak, an Indian cinematographer, shot a 90-minute feature film on iPhone.
An Indian cinematographer shot an entire movie on iPhone during the pandemic in the US, setting a new trend for post-Covid filmmaking. Kalpak Pathak shot the entire 90-minute feature film, called Amidst My Own, on phone.
“Due to the current scenario, where cost cutting and budget films are most preferred, shooting films on iphone is gaining prominence, not widely though. Filmmaking in Hollywood is changing due to the pandemic and with technological advancements, shooting a film on an iphone, though a rare feat, can be seen as the future of low budget filmmaking,” said Kalpak Pathak, a cinematographer based in Los Angeles, USA.
Coronavirus has affected every person and large population is struggling to balance out their economic condition. The filmmakers are also finding it difficult to spend huge amount of money in making a movie as most of the cinema halls are still not operating.
Amidst My Own, which Kalpak started working on since January 27, is based on an Indian chauffeur falling in love with his American employer’s girlfriend. The film is expected to release early next year.
While shooting the commercial movie on phone for the first time, according to Pathak, his team faced challenges due to the pandemic and budget constraints. The film was shot using minimum number of crew members and logistics.
“Filming on a phone comes with many challenges but it is always worth all the effort when we explore new techniques and technology. I believe a film can be shot through any visual capturing device as long as there is a good eye for photography. Although, it’s not just the phone which is the sole equipment but the phone-rigs, filters, lenses, gimbal, portable microphone is what we need as well. Initially, I was criticised for taking up a project to be shot on iPhone, but why not? Today, the scenario is such that most directors, production houses prefer artists who can shoot on a low budget yet give the best visuals,” added Kalpak Pathak.
Popular TV host Conan O’Brien also filmed his show on an iPhone on March 30 due to pandemic. Oscar winning Cinematographer Roger Deakins had said in an interview that he is willing to shoot on whatever format best fits the story and vision of the director, even if that means filming on a cell phone. Lawrence Sher, an Oscar nominated Cinematographer, who shot the film Joker, had also shot a short film on iPhone.
